Jarvis & Dundas: Final Video

For future reference, one should always make sure to set up the sequence settings in Final Cut Express manually because clicking "change sequence settings to match clip" does not actually set up your sequence properly. In the event that you don't set it up manually and trust technology to do what it says it's going to, you will end up having to start over. Also, Final Cut Express needs about 20gb free on your computer in order to render a video - if you do not have about 20gb free, Final Cut will spend an hour rendering before it tells you that it doesn't have enough memory to finish. I hate Final Cut Express.

Project01 Final - Rational

Rational:
The movie tells a story, beginning with a dark and seedy past and ending with hope for the future. The story is told by a man never shown, with visuals provided by some outside observer. The final concept developed around an interview I had with a local Chinese food deliveryman who had lived in the area a long time. His description gave a very clear idea of the general feel of the area as well as some of the local landmarks, many of which no longer existed. I took the audio from our conversation and cut it up to create a concise narration. I was an outside observer throughout this process, relying on the knowledge of others to create my perception. Initially I was told that my footage felt somewhat voyeuristic; this seemed very appropriate for what I was creating. I tried to carry the feeling of being an observer throughout the video, emphasizing it by using shots like the zoom in on the homeless man from a distance and keeping the shot of the homeless shelter where the edge of the car window I was filming from came into frame. Everything about the location had a seedy feel to it, which was best captured at night. Filming at night presented me with many problems as far as quality and available light. To an extent, the quality issues only added to the voyeur feel. The interview audio had a lot of room noise to it but I found that I was able to blend it with the background noise. The music used in the end credits was initially going to be playing throughout but I found that the music only made the audio sound busy and added nothing to the overall concept and feel that wasn’t already there.
